Editor’s Note

Dear Readers,

Welcome to the inaugural issue of Prism, a student-run journal of history and social science founded by and for high school students. We decided to establish Prism to fill what we see as a void in the high school publishing space: that of academic works on history and the social sciences. At Milton Academy, we saw first hand how talented young writers can be, and how innovative and bold their arguments often are; that such high quality writing often goes unrecognized, we found regrettable. Through Prism, we hope to provide a channel for these writers to publish the work they are most proud of, disseminate innovative research and interpretation, and motivate the creation of high-quality work.

In this issue, you will find a wide range of historical arguments and analyses, with topics ranging from the authoritarian political movements of twentieth-century Louisiana to the political theories underpinning Kurdish nationalism. While we did not choose to adopt a theme for this issue, we believe that each and every one of the articles contained herein reflects Prism’s editorial commitment to publicize work that is not only accurate and enlightening, but also deeply relevant. In that vein, we commit to continue publishing works which shed light upon the difficult social issues of the present by looking to the past. Above all, we hope for Prism to be accessible; if you have any work you would like considered for publication or would like to be involved in this nascent stage of our journal’s development, please do not hesitate to reach out.

Sincerely,

The Editors-in-Chief,

Coby Mulliken and Trew Strong
